Self Portrait Saturday

by DeM0NiCk on January 24, 2010, under Tidbits

I don’t usually wake up early on Saturday mornings, but yesterday was different as I had to do my portrait photo shoot. Yes, you heard right, it’s a photo shoot entirely on ME. A very special thanks to Siew Yen, who is such a gem to proposed the idea some time ago. She is not a professional photographer (not yet), but is keen in experimenting as well as learning using test subjects/guinea pig like me. I agreed to it as I thought it would be fun and being the vain pot that I am…why not right? Immediately we were thinking of where to do the shoot. We had a few venues in mind, but we chose Jarrod & Rawlins and Aliyaa in Damansara Heights as it had the setting that we were looking for…a bungalow turned bar/restaurant.

Below are just some of the samples that were taken. There are just too many to put up, so I just picked a few for you to have a look.

So what do you all think? Any comments? Yes, I know I do look a little “kayu” in front of the camera but I’m not a pro either…but I’m happy so it doesn’t really matter what you think then! :P

  • Thanks Nora. I have a few more I like on a CD...but I think I shall not put them up as yet :)
  • I like photo number 3, 5, 6 and 8 :D
  • Well over all if you ask me is all good shots. Subject matter wise got some problem. LOL. But on a serious note, as the subject matter, you need to know your good side and bad. Which angle works for you and which don't Helps the photographer a little. Most great portrait shots can tell a story just by looking into the subjects eyes. Your glasses don't help, but it needs to tell a moment, a story. Not just beautiful lighting. The point I'm trying to make is that as much as it is a very well shot photo, it lacks soul. I can't feel what you feel when I see the photo. Hence thats why you say you look like 'kayu'. Cos that is what you are feeling then.

My compliments to Siew Yen, nice takes. No doubting on her eye for lighting. Composition still can work on a little but to excel, she needs to bring out the emotions in the shots. Not just pretty pictures. That will differentiate the photographer she is to be vs the other guy on flickr.

My 2 cents worth... since you ask.
