New Age Wedding

by DeM0NiCk on September 30, 2011, under Tidbits

Hello hello! It’s been long while again since I neglected this space. Been pretty lazy busy of late with work and wedding prep. Yes, it’s always easy going until the final few weeks you got left for preparation for the big day. The lucky thing is that we did most of our preparations across a few months, which left us a little more breathing space and to not scramble and panic for last minute items. I guess the most important thing now is having a checklist of things undone.

wedding stress

Who would have thought having a wedding needed so much preparations? Sometimes I ask myself are certain things necessary? Why do others have the expectations that a wedding has to be as such? Is it because someone who read too many Cinderella story books came up with all these ideas of how an ideal wedding should be? I was speaking to my uncle the other day about my preparations, and he mentioned that during his time (probably about 30-40 odd years ago), for his wedding, there is no need to invite friends and colleagues. All he did was hire a chef from a restaurant, put up some tents outside his house, and invited all close family members and relatives. That’s it! He then ask, why want to waste so much time and money just to plan for this one day. Well, it made me stop and wonder as well….and that he had a point.

I guess today, society sees us differently. It’s all about ego, status and how they perceive you. Today if you have a wedding banquet and not invite your friends and colleagues, you’re seen as snobbish or stingy. If you don’t have pre-wedding shots done, you’re seen as trying to save money. If you don’t have a wedding banquet at all, you’re seen as you’re trying to hide something (scandal? bride is pregnant?). Why is it does society sees us as such? What happened to the times where weddings were just kept simple amongst family members and relatives? Mind you, back then, the term “wedding planner” does not even exist! People hire wedding planners simply because there are too many things to do. But imagine if it’s just kept simple…

Anyway, not complaining much as most of our preps are already done. The major thing left is sorting out the guest list and seating arrangements. I guess that’s the one that gives you the most headache during any wedding. Thankfully, I have an awesome wife and mother-in-law, who are always so understanding and supportive in so many ways. Love them both.

Until then, stay tuned for more updates

Of Love & Fate

by DeM0NiCk on June 21, 2010, under Travels

Do you believe in fate? Do you believe that all things happen for a reason? Well, I’m not really a true believer of fate but I do believe things happen for a reason.

A few months ago, I was planning my annual trip to Singapore to do some shopping and also to party with my friends there. I had to postponed the trip because I had to attend a wedding of a good friend of mine. At first I was quite hesitant to go for his wedding simply because it was held out of town. But nevertheless, my friend is only married once and I was to be one of his many "heng dais", so I guess the choice was a pretty obvious one…so Singapore can wait.

Well, all I can say now is that I never regretted the trip. The saying that love works in mysterious ways is so true indeed. Like a fairytale or a script out of some Hollywood chick flick; I was one of the groomsmen and she was one of the bridesmaid. I guess love finds you when you least expect it…and yes..I found her there and we’re together now.  =)

The Twin Sisters

by DeM0NiCk on February 8, 2009, under Tidbits

I’ve known both Sheila and her twin sister Sylvia for the longest time. Back when they were in high school, not many people can tell them apart. Initially, like most people, I do get confuse as to who is who as well. But as time went by, I manage to tell both of them apart and I must say, they are totally different people with very different personalities. Over the years (since Form 2, which we were 14 years old back then), I kept in touch with both sisters even though both of them were apart from one another after high school. Sheila (the elder of the 2) spent her university days in Sabah and just recently moved back here to KL, while Sylvia spent most of her time in Penang as well as the US for work. Even though I kept in touch with both of them throughout the years, it is very rare that I manage to see them both together whenever I meet up with one of them. In fact, I think the last time I’ve ever gone out with both sisters together was back during my college days.

Yesterday was my first time that I’ve met them together after so long, during Sheila’s wedding. It was small and beautiful event held in St. Francis Xavier church in Jalan Gasing. I must say, it’s good to see them both again. It’s also the first time I’m meeting Sylvia’s husband Jason, who flew back from the US for the occasion.

To Sheila, Congratulations to you and Francis! May both of you have a blessed and happy life together. To Sylvia, all the best to you and Jason in your future endeavors as well. I feel very happy and blessed to have such friends like both of you.

Update: 19 October 2008

by DeM0NiCk on October 19, 2008, under Parties

I’m going to try and not make this post too long and go into details but instead let the pictures do the talking.

Last Thursday night, I met up with Olivia and some of her friends at Poppy in KL for Josh Wink. Now, some people I know…don’t even know who Josh Wink is…but after I asked them to Wikipedia / Google him or "Higher State Of Consciousness" then they go…"OHHH…SO THAT’S JOSH WINK!". It’s sad that people only remember him for that, but he has a lot of other good mixes too which I think wasn’t really promoted well. Special thanks to Jamie for putting me on the guest list, although my supposed group of "kampung" I promised her didn’t show up that night…hehe

On Saturday morning, I got up at 6AM because one of my good friend Adrian is getting married and we (the "heng tais") have to be at his place by 7AM to be "briefed" and ready to battle the "chi muis". Now it’s an honor to be part of someone’s entourage but it can also be "suffering" to some extend. It’s a tradition that all of us "heng tais" have to endure several stupid tasks setup by the "chi muis" before the groom can get to his bride. We were very lucky that some of the task didn’t involve eating anything.

All the "Heng tais"…ready for battle!!!

 Stella's entourage

The "Chi Muis"…so ganas…got cane sommore!! =(

TASK 1: Wear underwear that spells out "WE R HERE 4 STELLA!"

This one reminded me of detention class back in high school!

TASK 2: All "Heng Tais" have to wax part of their leg

and this is the result of that, this morning…

can you see a square smooth patch on my leg?? =(

TASK 3: Sing a song and include words like "Stella", "Siew Yok" and "Por-por"

"Only Stellaaaa…."

After all that…they still didn’t want to let us in…and still demanded more money. But well, like I said…we got it easy…so the groom paid up an undisclosed amount after all of us negotiated. We later went to church for mass, and to get the blessing from the church. At this point…all the "heng tais" was supposed to provide transportation to all the "chi muis" to church and back.

Church ended around noon and then there was lunch and also the tea ceremony. After that, everyone was tired and went back to rest for the dinner. I love wedding dinners. Not only you can get to eat good food, but it’s also a good place to see the friends who have been missing in action for long periods. I got to catch up with my college buddies and also friends which I have not seen for such a long time.

The BFG Reunion with new members…

And of course how can a wedding dinner do without booze right? I for one was mixing red wine and whiskey all night. But well, there wasn’t any major casualties but Kevin and Anthony (the best men) were definitely the "targets" of the night. Hehe..

NOTE: Some of the pics (without watermarks) are taken off Anthony’s album on Facebook
